Hamilton offers significantly more value than Toronto, particularly for buyers looking for older homes and established neighbourhoods. Dundas, Westdale, and Kirkendall are popular with people making that move. The trade-off is the commute, which is worth thinking through honestly before committing. For a lot of buyers it makes sense. For some it doesn't. 

What should I know before buying a century home in Hamilton? 
Older homes in Hamilton are genuinely appealing and genuinely old. Knob and tube wiring, galvanized plumbing, aging roofs, and foundation quirks are common. A thorough inspection matters more on an older home than almost anywhere else. None of these are automatic dealbreakers but they affect your offer and your budget, and you should go in with a clear picture.

What is the best neighbourhood in Hamilton for families?
Every family is different. Want great schools and have a healthy budget? Ancaster might be for you, unless you prefer the urban feel of Kirkendall. Westdale is also established and walkable, with a strong community feel and proximity to McMaster. Crown Point is more affordable and has seen significant investment in recent years, but it's still up and coming. Everywhere has families. The right fit depends on your budget and what kind of neighbourhood energy you're looking for. 

Should I buy or keep renting?
It depends on how long you plan to stay, what your finances look like, and what ownership actually costs in the neighbourhoods you're considering. There's no universal right answer and anyone who tells you otherwise is probably trying to sell you something.
